One of our most recent projects was at North East Clinic in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The work carried out was the wiring of 3 floors with Cat5e cabling to be used for computers, printers, telephones, fax machines, wireless access points and the Paxton Door entry system which was also installed by Layercom.

Cat5e or Cat6 Cable?

There is a great deal of debate among people about whether new cabling installations should use Cat5e or Cat6. Many people incorrectly assume that by running Cat6 they will then have a Gigabit Ethernet network. However, in order to achieve true Gigabit Ethernet speeds, every single component on a network must be gigabit rated, such as the switches, hubs and network interface cards. This isn't to say that there aren't differences between Cat5e and Cat6, however. The general difference between category 5e and category 6 is in the transmission performance. While Cat5e can support gigabit speeds, Cat6 is certified to handle gigabit Ethernet. Additionally, the Cat6 specification is better suited toward environments that are generally unfriendly to twisted pair cabling. This includes areas that have lots of interference from things like power lines, lights, and manufacturing equipment. Still, for most applications, Cat5e is perfectly suitable and preferable to Cat6: it is more economical and performs almost as well. However, if you can be certain that all the components on your network are gigabit rated, and the volume of the data being transmitted calls for certified gigabit performance, then Cat6 is the way to go.

Wireless Networks

Wireless Networks

Wireless LANs offer the following productivity, convenience, and cost advantages over wired networks:

  • Mobility: Wireless LAN systems can provide LAN users with access to real-time information anywhere in their organization. This mobility supports productivity and service opportunities not possible with wired networks.

There are now thousands of universities, hotels and public places with public wireless connection. These free you from having to be at home or at work to access the Internet.

  • Installation Speed and Simplicity: Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings.
  • Reduced Cost-of-Ownership: While the initial investment required for wireless LAN hardware can be higher than the cost of wired LAN hardware, overall installation expenses and life-cycle costs can be significantly lower. Long-term cost benefits are greatest in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves and changes.
  • Scalability: Wireless LAN systems can be configured in a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications and installations. Configurations are easily changed and range from peer-to-peer networks suitable for a small number of users to full infrastructure networks of thousands of users that enable roaming over a broad area.

One of our recent installations was for Burradon Farm Cottages in Northumberland.

Burradon Farm is a working farm of some 400 acres at the heart of which lies the 14th century Pele Tower, the farm house, the terraced farm cottages and a fine range of traditional stone conversions.

All of the original farm buildings have been converted to create luxury, self-contained, self catering houses and cottages for the visitor, holiday-maker or business person.  There are spacious houses that will sleep from 5-8 people, quality ground floor cottages for 4, pretty one double bedroomed cottages, fully accessible disabled friendly cottages and best value farm cottages that will sleep 4 comfortably. All houses and cottages have WiFi internet connection.

Burradon Farm is conveniently located only a few miles from the spectacular Northumbrian coastline and within easy access of the cultural heritage and dynamic centre which is Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The International Ferry Terminal is five miles and the Newcastle International Airport only seven miles away.
