Instructor Training

There are three main exams to become a Driving Instructor.

Part 1 - Theory

100 Questions with a pass mark of 85%
Hazard perception test—Identifying hazards from video clips
Once part one is passed you have a period of two years to complete the other parts of the qualification.

Part 2 - Practical Driving Test

During this test you may commit a maximum of six driver faults.
That is a weakness in your driving that in no way poses a danger or inconvenience to other road users.
If you commit more than six minor faults or serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.
This test may only be taken three times in this attempt at qualifying or else you have to wait for a period of two years from the start of your current course for another try including re-sitting the theory and Hazard Perception tests.

Part 3 - Test of Instructional Ability

This exam is conducted in a dual controlled car displaying “L” plates with a senior examiner taking the role of a learner driver. You will be examined on your ability to teach the examiner in two subjects. You must achieve a grade* 4 on both parts of this examination to pass as an instructor. This examination may only be taken three times at this attempt and all attempts must be taken within the two year period as above.

Trainee Licence to Instruct

After passing parts one and two you may take out a trainee licence to instruct which entitles you to teach real pupils under the sponsorship and supervision of a qualified instructor. This licence runs for six months and the DSA will only normally issue one licence per attempt.

*Instructing Grades

Grade 1 Poor and dangerous instruction
Grade 2 Weak and potentially dangerous instruction
Grade 3 Some serious shortfalls
Grade 4 Adequate with some minor weakness in instruction
Grade 5 Good performance and only very minor weakness in instruction
Grade 6 Excellent instructing performance

Fee for this course -

£2500 which includes books and training aidsand one attempt at each of the three examinations. And as many training hours as is required to either pass the course or until the attempt becomes impossible to complete.

The fee does not include the £200 registration fee when you qualify onto the Driving Standards Agency register or the £120 fee also payable to the DSA if you decide to take out a trainee licence after passing Examination Part 2.
